There is no intrusion whatsoever. This is a public blog that we use for our family, but we invite useful and applicable comments from anyone on the planet. It is the Internet you know. We have not done a good job of updating as of late, but hope to improve over time.

My daughter is still dealing with the problem, but we have close supervision of her treatment by a great doctor. Every childs condition is different, therefore the treatment will vary. You experience may be very different from ours. Our doctor so far has only prescribed glasses and occasional patching (once a day for an hour so far). However, we are about to do some drops, but for the sole reason of increasing the accuracy of her eyeglass prescription.

My daughter has not had any resistive issues with patching for an hour at a time, but I know that three days of drops and dialation will be more difficult.

It sounds like you have your hands full with your child. Thanks for the kind comments and you are free to write more if you like. That's what this blog is for, so we can all share experiences without geographic boundaries.

Dear Will & Lucy
I don’t know how this whole blog thin g works & I am sorry if I am intruding on your family website, but I stumbled across it when I was looking up information on amblyopia as well. I thought you might want to hear some information from a fellow parent whose child is under-going such treatment. My one-year-old daughter has amblyopia and is currently under treatment using the atropine drops.. Out of concern I wanted to get more information on it just to educate myself on its effects & possible side-effects. She started out with the patch at about 10 months old, but as she got older she became privy to the fact that we were putting this big band-aid on her eye, resulting in either her refusal to let us put it on or ripping it off when she discovered it.. So we have resorted to using the drops. The doctor said that her eye would remain dilated for 5 days, but when it was still dilated after 11 days I became concerned and did not want to give her another dose of the medication. He said the prolonged dilation may have occurred due to her light eye color.
It is good that you are becoming informed & I would recommend getting treatment as soon as possible since it is easier to reverse (in less time) when they are younger.
Just as some added information to you, this treatment does come with it’s challenges – both to you and your child. She will become irritable, cranky & tired since she is being forced to use an eye that is weak. It is also difficult to see your child with the patch on (if that is the route you go). The protective instincts kick in when you see your child in an almost wounded state – so be prepared. I cried several times & had to reassure myself that was doing it for her benefit. It truly is a test of patience. The only advise I can give is to try to keep her occupied and be available as much as possible (this is difficult sometimes, I know). After all, it must be a scary thing for a child to not be able to see properly and to not know why.
I hope this helps. Good luck to all of you!
Susan
Ps. Again, sorry for the intrusion

Phebe, the comments are moderated by myself to prevent the spamming of this blog. This is one of the biggest problems with blogs, but there is various software plug-ins to help with this. Every time you post a comment, I must approve it first. Pretty soon I will be adding some software so I don't have to do this anymore. Stay tuned!

I know. Google has not updated their index yet. I'm surprised it hasn't happened already, but it will. At least I was able to bomb Yahoo though. Check it out: search Yahoo.com using the same phrase and we are the only site listed. There ya go.
